Nikki’s story

My nystagmus story starts with being in school and struggling so hard to read everything off the chalkboard. I would become so frustrated as everyone else could see and I was struggling.

I would become bored and fed up as a result. However, once I got the assistance from school and RNIB, I really began to excel. As I began to enjoy and excel in academia, I felt like my nystagmus was not the barrier I perceived it to be.

As I finished my masters which was aided massively by the disability service. They helped me gain access to materials, technology and advocated on my behalf. I was in a place where the main aim was to ensure equity with my peers.

I’m currently working my dream job, where I train people to work with children and adults with complex needs. I am lucky as I am confident about speaking up for myself when it comes to meeting my adjustments. My team is very supportive and keep an eye out for when I have eye fatigue. My nystagmus made me realise that no matter what I should have the same opportunities as my peers. Even though I am disabled, it doesn’t define who I am and it has never prevented me from attaining everything I have wanted to achieve in life.
