Overview

The role of the Development Coordinator is to build on the charity’s core services and develop new ones to meet the growing and changing needs of the nystagmus community, to support income generation to ensure those services can continue to be funded.

Given current staff capacity and funding levels, involvement from volunteers, stakeholders and partners will be necessary for service development and delivery.

This is an outward facing role. The postholder needs to take the initiative in reaching out to ever wider groups of potential beneficiaries and supporters and approaching new working partners. This will be achieved through communications, networking and business development skills, in collaboration with the Executive Information and Development Manager and Trustees.  

Key Responsibilities

The Development Coordinator will work across all areas of service delivery, primarily focusing on generating income through fundraising, whilst developing and extending support services for the nystagmus community. Instigating and overseeing a range of new activities, events and interventions to raise the profile of the charity as a service provider, the post holder will work closely with the Executive Information and Development Manager and Trustees to develop and implement a support and information strategy which incorporates volunteer recruitment, peer-to-peer support and networking and a funding strategy to ensure income generation and sustainability.

Scope and develop local, regional and virtual peer to peer support:

  • Lead on facilities and events management for big nystagmus meet ups going forward
  • Build on experience from current regional and virtual groups to roll out a network of volunteer-led peer-to-peer support groups
  • Ensure that the needs of underrepresented groups are considered in the development of local support and recruitment of beneficiaries
  • Recruit and develop volunteers to take over responsibility for face to face and virtual groups
  • Coordinate the checks that need to be in place to ensure safety of service delivery (including referencing and DBS checks)
  • Maintain relationships with volunteers and ensure they are working within safeguarding guidelines and Nystagmus Network policies
  • Ensure continual professional development and volunteer reviews are in place

Build and promote an attractive and engaging fundraising offer with a wide appeal

  • Prospect value for money mass participation fundraising events, promote and manage places, support sponsorship
  • Devise, promote and manage fundraising activities and campaigns to tie in with Nystagmus Awareness Day, seasonal giving, etc
  • Celebrate and promote the achievements of recent and current fundraisers to encourage others to take part in fundraising
  • Build relationships with past, current and potential new fundraisers
  • Support the EIDM with legacy fundraising, corporate sponsorship and any other initiatives

Market the Nystagmus Network service offer to relevant stakeholder groups

  • Make full use of the Nystagmus Network’s current and any potential new communications channels and the website
  • Attend exhibitions and conferences to promote the services of the charity
  • Communicate messages clearly and maintain the reputation of the Nystagmus Network at all times

Planning, reporting and data management

  • Develop annual action plans and event schedules for regional/virtual groups and for fundraising
  • Continually monitor progress against targets, ensuring costs stay within budgeted expenditure
  • Monitor monthly intervention and participation levels and report progress to agreed KPIs
  • Record all fundraising participation data, including communications, income generated and costs
  • Ensure all data complies with internal procedures and general data protection regulations

Other

  • Provide information and support by email to people living with nystagmus or supporting someone who has the condition
  • Represent the charity at events, giving talks and presentations to parents, schools and other interested organisations
  • Any other tasks deemed appropriate by the Trustees or the EIDM

 Person specification

Experience

  • Project management
  • Working with partner agencies at all levels
  • Work or volunteering with charities, particularly those supporting people with impaired vision
  • Project evaluation and learning from best practice

Knowledge

  • Understanding of vision impairment issues, support and services
  • How to interact and engage with past, current and potential beneficiaries and supporters

Skills

  • Competent IT skills, including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and database use
  • Strong communication skills, oral and written
  • Ability to maintain beneficiary and volunteer confidentiality
  • Project evaluation and establishing key learning
  • Digital skills including use of social media for work purposes, copywriting

Education and Training

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent job-related experience 
  • Qualification or equivalent experience in project management and/or teaching/training
